International Office

June 29,2005 MC

Dear Student,

We look forward to seeing you inAarhusin August.

In the following, I shall give you some practical information:

Accommodation

My assistant, Ms Lene Pedersen, will contact you later by e-mail with information about your accommodation, which we have arranged for you. Questions concerning accommodation should be e-mailed to Lene (lpe@iha.dk) .

Arrival

While you are here, you will have a “Buddy” – a student who will meet you at the station, show you your room and help you with practical questions. Ms Lene Pedersen will inform you of the name and e-mail address of your Buddy. We expect you to mail him/her with the exact time of your arrival inAarhus.

If you arrive at the airport, which has two names (either Aarhus or Tirstrup), you must take the airport bus toAarhusimmediately after you have picked up your luggage. You can find the bus right outside the hall. The fare is 70 DKK, and you must get off at the last stop (Aarhus Railway Station) after app. 45 minutes.

Registration and Insurance

Your Buddy will accompany you to the National Registration Office (Folkeregister), where you will get a personal registration number (CPR-number) and a Medical Card (Sygesikringsbevis). Nationals from outside the Nordic Countries, and the EU countries are not covered by the Danish National Health Service until six weeks after registration, sowe recommend that all foreign students take out an insurance policy which covers medical treatment before you leave forDenmark. We also recommend that all foreign students take out an insurance policy against liability, accident and theft.

The semester start and the BTCLP1 course

The semester commences with the Introduction Week, in which the BTCLP1 course (cooperation, learning and project work) and the BTCCU1 course (Cross-Cultural Understanding and English Language) are included. Please find enclosed the preliminary program for the Introduction Week, which will start onMonday the 22ndof August at 9.00 hours at the main entrance,Dalgas Avenue2.

During the first week there will be some introduction to the IHA Campus and a visit to the registration offices.

From Monday the 29th of August the other courses will commence. Please find enclosed a schedule for the academic week and the whole semester.

Be here in good time

The Introduction Week and the start of the two courses included there are essential for the cooperation in the project groups on the central 15-credit project work. It is therefore very important that you are present and ready for the class on Monday morning the 22ndof August. As mentioned elsewhere you should plan your arrival inAarhusno later that Friday the 19thof August in order to be ready for the first week of studies.

What to bring toAarhus?

Besides some clothes for the Danish summer, typically with temperatures from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius with a variety of rain and sunshine you should bring a warm jacket for the autumn.

Remember thatDenmarkhas not yet converted to the EURO, so for your own sake, please bring Danish currency.

If you have the opportunity to bring a bicycle, you should consider doing so, as it is the preferred means of local transportation for most students in town.Aarhushas a good public transportation system, and used bicycles can be purchased at a reasonable price, if desired.

If you have previously worked in some of the academic fields on the agenda for your study program, you should bring your books and notes with you. A dictionary for translations between your native language and English could also prove valuable.

Bring some photos of your family and friends and some from your home region. It is nice to have around when you are far from home and it is often much easier to explain to your new friends here where you are from and what it’s like at home if your can show a picture or two.

Presentation

Please bring with you a short written presentation of yourself in English in Word-format or equivalent on a disk. The presentation should be approximately one half typewritten page and contain the following elements:

  • Name and age

  • Nationality and name of home university

  • Educational background

  • Academic interests

  • Other interests

If possible, please include a photo of yourself as well for the presentation.

The presentation will be posted on a homepage with general access for all the students the first week in order to make it easier for us all to get to know each other.
